The Key to Effective Content Marketing: Do Not Be Selfish

content-marketingMaking effective use of your content marketing platform in order to reach your audience and grow their numbers requires that your writing be very carefully approached. With so many brands, businesses and individuals broadcasting themselves through content marketing, it is more important than ever not to let yourself become background noise.

Identifying Background Noise

If you are creating content for a company, you can reasonably assume that your existing audience is there for you because they are interested in the products of services that you offer. Any content that does not directly or indirectly serve to increase the utility of your service for your audience can be considered background noise.

An excellent example is the all-too-common office furniture post. Everybody gets that it is very exciting for you to get a brand new sofa in your administrative office, but not everybody cares. This turns the event into the kind of background noise that your audience will increasingly filter out, just like advertisements, as they seek to get to the good stuff.

What Is The Good Stuff?

Your audience knows what the good stuff is – it is the reason they follow you in the first place. They want content that is newsworthy, content that is relevant and content that delivers value. This means identifying their needs and serving their curiosities concerning your products or services.

Even something as simple as sharing and commenting on some piece of breaking news in the field of your business is better than mundane, run-of-the-mill posts designed to be ignored.

As companies become more personable than ever, it is becoming more important for them to also develop some key social skills. Just imagine that you are at a party with someone who only talks about themselves – nobody wants to be that person, and your brand should not be either.
